Structural Study on new Tanin, Polygagallin, from Acerginnala Max

Abstract
A new tannin, palygagallin, related to acertannin, is isolated from air-dried leaves of Acer ginnala Max. as prismatic cryitals with 1/2 H_(2)O per mole, m.p. 154-155¡Æ and [¥á]^(29)_(D)+43.79¡É,
Polyganallin gives hexaxcetate, m.p. 164.5¡É. [¥á]^(23)_(D)+42¡Æ, on treating with acetic anhydride and on tresting with diazomethane, gives trimethylether, m.p. 176¡É, [¥á]^(22)_(D)+53.43, which yields triacetate, m/p/ 160.5¡É, [¥á]^(22)_(D)+132.5¡Æ, on acetylation and is not attacked by periodate. On hydrolysis, trimethoxypolygagallin yield one mole of polygalitol and that of trimethoxygallic acid.
By the above results polygalallin has been established as 3-galloylpolygalitol.
